Motobu Chôki, preconizaba un karate basado en el combate cuerpo a cuerpo, muy diferente al que conocemos actualmente. Como pionero, escribió en 1926 un tratado sobre la práctica del combate llamado El Karatejutsu: boxeo de Okinawa (sobre el trabajo en pareja). Sin embargo, este escrito pronto se volvió imposible de encontrar, simplemente desapareció con La guerra del Pacífico y la muerte de su autor.
